1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Come, Barrois," said the young girl, "take some of thislemonade; I see you are coveting a good draught of it."
2. "Ah, here is a private staircase," said the count; "that isconvenient. Light me, M. Bertuccio, and go first; we willsee where it leads to."
3. The inspector listened attentively; then, turning to thegovernor, observed, "He will become religious -- he isalready more gentle; he is afraid, and retreated before thebayonets -- madmen are not afraid of anything; I made somecurious observations on this at Charenton." Then, turning tothe prisoner, "What is it you want?" said he.
4. "Oh, I was arranging a little surprise for you."
5. M. de Villefort kept the promise he had made to MadameDanglars, to endeavor to find out how the Count of MonteCristo had discovered the history of the house at Auteuil. He wrote the same day for the required information to M. deBoville, who, from having been an inspector of prisons, waspromoted to a high office in the police; and the latterbegged for two days time to ascertain exactly who would bemost likely to give him full particulars. At the end of thesecond day M. de Villefort received the following note: --
6. In the vehicle was a young woman and a child of about sevenor eight clasped in each other's arms. Terror seemed to havedeprived them even of the power of uttering a cry. Thecarriage creaked and rattled as it flew over the roughstones, and the slightest obstacle under the wheels wouldhave caused disaster; but it kept on in the middle of theroad, and those who saw it pass uttered cries of terror.

1. "To the king?"
2. "Mercedes!" called a joyous voice from without, --"Mercedes!"
3. Villefort hastily quitted the apartment, but reflecting thatthe sight of the deputy procureur running through thestreets would be enough to throw the whole city intoconfusion, he resumed his ordinary pace. At his door heperceived a figure in the shadow that seemed to wait forhim. It was Mercedes, who, hearing no news of her lover, hadcome unobserved to inquire after him.
4. "Magnificent windows, so beautiful, so large, that I believea man of your size should pass through each frame."
5. "No, with the baron."
6. "Yes; you! How came it known?"

1. "Have you made up your mind when you shall be thereyourself?"
2. "What is the matter?" said Madame de Villefort in a harshand constrained tone.
3. "What?" cried Franz, "was Luigi Vampa in the carriage withthe Roman peasants?"
4. Like other dwellers in the south, he was a man of soberhabits and moderate desires, but fond of external show, vain, and addicted to display. During the days of hisprosperity, not a festivity took place without himself andwife being among the spectators. He dressed in thepicturesque costume worn upon grand occasions by theinhabitants of the south of France, bearing equalresemblance to the style adopted both by the Catalans andAndalusians; while La Carconte displayed the charmingfashion prevalent among the women of Arles, a mode of attireborrowed equally from Greece and Arabia. But, by degrees,watch-chains, necklaces, parti-colored scarfs, embroideredbodices, velvet vests, elegantly worked stockings, stripedgaiters, and silver buckles for the shoes, all disappeared;and Gaspard Caderousse, unable to appear abroad in hispristine splendor, had given up any further participation inthe pomps and vanities, both for himself and wife, althougha bitter feeling of envious discontent filled his mind asthe sound of mirth and merry music from the joyous revellersreached even the miserable hostelry to which he still clung, more for the shelter than the profit it afforded.
5. "Then?"
6. "Bless me!" exclaimed Caderousse, "fifty thousand francs!Surely the diamond was as large as a nut to be worth allthat."

1. "I do not offer you a million, because I have it not; but Iwill give you a hundred crowns if, the first time you go toMarseilles, you will seek out a young girl named Mercedes,at the Catalans, and give her two lines from me."
2. "But then you yourself are known to others?"
3. "Every criminal says the same thing."
4、 "And a thousand francs a year."
5、 It was, indeed, Maximilian Morrel, who had passed a wretchedexistence since the previous day. With the instinct peculiarto lovers he had anticipated after the return of Madame deSaint-Meran and the death of the marquis, that somethingwould occur at M. de Villefort's in connection with hisattachment for Valentine. His presentiments were realized,as we shall see, and his uneasy forebodings had goaded himpale and trembling to the gate under the chestnut-trees.Valentine was ignorant of the cause of this sorrow andanxiety, and as it was not his accustomed hour for visitingher, she had gone to the spot simply by accident or perhapsthrough sympathy. Morrel called her, and she ran to thegate. "You here at this hour?" said she. "Yes, my poorgirl," replied Morrel; "I come to bring and to hear badtidings."

The tenants of the humble lodging were a young couple whohad been scarcely married a week; and seeing them, Dantessighed heavily. Nothing in the two small chambers formingthe apartments remained as it had been in the time of theelder Dantes; the very paper was different, while thearticles of antiquated furniture with which the rooms hadbeen filled in Edmond's time had all disappeared; the fourwalls alone remained as he had left them. The bed belongingto the present occupants was placed as the former owner ofthe chamber had been accustomed to have his; and, in spiteof his efforts to prevent it, the eyes of Edmond weresuffused in tears as he reflected that on that spot the oldman had breathed his last, vainly calling for his son. Theyoung couple gazed with astonishment at the sight of theirvisitor's emotion, and wondered to see the large tearssilently chasing each other down his otherwise stern andimmovable features; but they felt the sacredness of hisgrief, and kindly refrained from questioning him as to itscause, while, with instinctive delicacy, they left him toindulge his sorrow alone. When he withdrew from the scene ofhis painful recollections, they both accompanied himdownstairs, reiterating their hope that he would come againwhenever he pleased, and assuring him that their poordwelling would ever be open to him. As Edmond passed thedoor on the fourth floor, he paused to inquire whetherCaderousse the tailor still dwelt there; but he received, for reply, that the person in question had got intodifficulties, and at the present time kept a small inn onthe route from Bellegarde to Beaucaire.
