1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Well," he said in answer, "we'd be glad to consider yourapplication. We shan't decide for a few days yet. Suppose yousend us your references."
2. He looked down at his paper and shook his head negatively.
3. Now came in sight, three or four blocks farther on, a heap ofsomething on the track.
4. "Now, come on," he said.
5. "Oh, jolly!" cried the latter.
6. "That is good," he said. "If she'll do that all through, I thinkit will take."

1. "I will," said the man.
2. "How would you like to try subduing London?" asked her manager, one afternoon.
3. The critics of the daily papers completed her triumph. Therewere long notices in praise of the quality of the burlesque, touched with recurrent references to Carrie. The contagiousmirth of the thing was repeatedly emphasised.
4. "Guess I'd better get up," he said.
5. During the acts Carrie found herself listening to him veryattentively. He mentioned things in the play which she mostapproved of--things which swayed her deeply.
6. Carrie only smiled consciously.

1. "And you don't know when he'll go away?" asked Hurstwood, quietly.
2. "And you looking like that!" said Carrie, throwing aside a longreserve.
3. In all her stay in the city, Carrie had never heard of this showyparade; had never even been on Broadway when it was taking place. On the other hand, it was a familiar thing to Mrs. Vance, who notonly knew of it as an entity, but had often been in it, goingpurposely to see and be seen, to create a stir with her beautyand dispel any tendency to fall short in dressiness bycontrasting herself with the beauty and fashion of the town.
4. "I will," said Carrie, who had not thought of it before.
5. "Not a word, then, until I see you again."
6. Accordingly, when he arrived, he was disappointed to find Carrieout. He trifled about, hoping that she was somewhere in theneighbourhood and would soon return. He constantly listened, expecting to hear her foot on the stair.

1. In her own apartments Carrie saw things which were lessons in thesame school.
2. They went on dining, while he went upstairs for his hat and coat.Presently the door clicked.
3. "You come around to the hotel to-morrow," she said, as sort ofpenance for error. "You can take dinner with me."
4、 "I don't think he wants to buy," he said to himself. "He doesn'ttalk right."
5、 She felt a wave of feeling sweep over her at this. It was prideat what seemed his admiration--affection for the man who couldfeel this concerning her.

Once the bright days of summer pass by, a city takes on thatsombre garb of grey, wrapt in which it goes about its laboursduring the long winter. Its endless buildings look grey, its skyand its streets assume a sombre hue; the scattered, leaflesstrees and wind-blown dust and paper but add to the generalsolemnity of colour. There seems to be something in the chillbreezes which scurry through the long, narrow thoroughfaresproductive of rueful thoughts. Not poets alone, nor artists, northat superior order of mind which arrogates to itself allrefinement, feel this, but dogs and all men. These feel as muchas the poet, though they have not the same power of expression. The sparrow upon the wire, the cat in the doorway, the dray horsetugging his weary load, feel the long, keen breaths of winter. It strikes to the heart of all life, animate and inanimate. Ifit were not for the artificial fires of merriment, the rush ofprofit-seeking trade, and pleasure-selling amusements; if thevarious merchants failed to make the customary display within andwithout their establishments; if our streets were not strung withsigns of gorgeous hues and thronged with hurrying purchasers, wewould quickly discover how firmly the chill hand of winter laysupon the heart; how dispiriting are the days during which the sunwithholds a portion of our allowance of light and warmth. We aremore dependent upon these things than is often thought. We areinsects produced by heat, and pass without it.

{ "I've had experience enough," said Hurstwood blandly, but he felta little diffident about referring to Fitzgerald and Moy.

  • 卡里斯马 08-04

"Well, I don't know," said Carrie, smiling.
