1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "And yet, with a little more material, we may prove that they arenot insurmountable," said Holmes. "I fancy that among your extensivearchives, Watson, you may find some which were nearly as obscure.Meanwhile, we shall put the case aside until more accurate data areavailable, and devote the rest of our morning to the pursuit ofneolithic man."
2. .
3. The interview left Sherlock Holmes very thoughtful, and severaltimes in the next few days I saw him take his slip of paper from hisnotebook and look long and earnestly at the curious figuresinscribed upon it. He made no allusion to the affair, however, untilone afternoon a fortnight or so later. I was going out when hecalled me back.
4. "The matter can be easily remedied," said the browbeaten doctor;"Mr. Sherlock Holmes can return to London by the morning train.""Hardly that, Doctor, hardly that," said Holmes, in his blandestvoice. "This northern air is invigorating and pleasant, so I proposeto spend a few days upon your moors, and to occupy my mind as best Imay. Whether I have the shelter of your roof or of the village inn is,of course, for you to decide."
5. "No, no; he found it. Its owner is unknown. I beg that youwill look upon it not as a battered billycock but as anintellectual problem. And, first, as to how it came here. Itarrived upon Christmas morning, in company with a good fat goose, which is, I have no doubt, roasting at this moment in front ofPeterson's fire. The facts are these: about four o'clock onChristmas morning, Peterson, who, as you know, is a very honestfellow, was returning from some small jollification and was makinghis way homeward down Tottenham Court Road. In front of him hesaw, in the gaslight, a tallish man, walking with a slightstagger, and carrying a white goose slung over his shoulder. Ashe reached the corner of Goodge Street, a row broke out betweenthis stranger and a little knot of roughs. One of the latterknocked off the man's hat, on which he raised his stick to defendhimself and, swinging it over his head, smashed the shop windowbehind him. Peterson had rushed forward to protect the strangerfrom his assailants; but the man, shocked at having broken thewindow, and seeing an official-looking person in uniform rushingtowards him, dropped his goose, took to his heels, and vanishedamid the labyrinth of small sheets which lie at the back ofTottenham Court Road. The roughs had also fled at the appearanceof Peterson, so that he was left in possession of the field ofbattle, and also of the spoils of victory in the shape of thisbattered hat and a most unimpeachable Christmas goose.""Which surely he restored to their owner?"
6. "Yes, and I have no doubt that is her ring."

1. Leaving the unconscious man in the charge of my housekeeper, weall three went down to the deadly lagoon. On the shingle there waspiled a little heap of towels and clothes left by the stricken man.Slowly I walked round the edge of the water, my comrades in Indianfile behind me. Most of the pool was quite shallow, but under thecliff where the beach was hollowed out it was four or five feetdeep. It was to this part that a swimmer would naturally go, for itformed a beautiful pellucid green pool as clear as crystal. A lineof rocks lay above it at the base of the cliff, and along this I ledthe way, peering eagerly into the depths beneath me. I had reached thedeepest and stillest pool when my eyes caught that for which they weresearching, and I burst into a shout of triumph.
2. In recording from time to time some of the curious experiences andinteresting recollections which I associate with my long andintimate friendship with Mr. Sherlock Holmes, I have continuallybeen faced by difficulties caused by his own aversion to publicity. Tohis sombre and cynical spirit all popular applause was alwaysabhorrent, and nothing amused him more at the end of a successful casethan to hand over the actual exposure to some orthodox official, andto listen with a mocking smile to the general chorus of misplacedcongratulation. It was indeed this attitude upon the part of my friendand certainly not any lack of interesting material which has caused meof late years to lay very few of my records before the public. Myparticipation in some of his adventures was always a privilege whichentailed discretion and reticence upon me.
3. "'I am afraid that it is quite essential,' said he. 'It is alittle fancy of my wife's, and ladies' fancies, you know, madam, ladies' fancies must be consulted. And so you won't cut your hair?'"'No, sir, I really could not,' I answered firmly.
4. "You can understand," said Holmes suavely, "that I extend to theaffairs of my other clients the same secrecy which I promise to you inyours."
5. I saw an intent look pass over Holmes's face.
6. Our young companion looked at me with a twinkle in his eye."The worst of the story is," said he, "that I show myself up as sucha confounded fool. Of course it may work out all right, and I don'tsee that I could have done otherwise; but if I have lost my crib andget nothing in exchange I shall feel what soft Johnny I have been. I'mnot very good at telling a story, Dr. Watson, but it is like this withme:

1. "Then I can wait in the next room."
2. "I thought I had squeezed all the juice out of it, but I see therewas a little over," he said. "I'm bound to say that I make nothingof the note except that there was something on hand, and that a woman,as usual, was at the bottom of it."
3. Our client had sat up with staring eyes and every tinge of colourstruck from his astonished face.
4. "No, my dear fellow, you will go down. This may be some triflingintrigue, and I cannot break my other important research for thesake of it. On Monday you will arrive early at Farnham; you willconceal yourself near Charlington Heath; you will observe thesefacts for yourself, and act as your own judgment advises. Then, havinginquired as to the occupants of the Hall, you will come back to me andreport. And now, Watson, not another word of the matter until wehave a few solid steppingstones on which we may hope to get acrossto our solution."
5. The banker recoiled in horror. "I should not dream of trying,"said he.
6. "Better close the front door," cried Holmes, and we all rusheddown the stairs together. We had hardly reached the hall when we heardthe baying of a hound, and then a scream of agony, with a horribleworrying sound which it was dreadful to listen to. An elderly man witha red face and shaking limbs came staggering out at a side door."My God" he cried. "Someone has loosed the dog. He's not been fedfor two days. Quick, quick, or we'll be too late!"

1. It was a dreadful cry that he gave- a yell which might have beenheard down the street. My skin went cold and my hair bristled atthat horrible scream. As I turned I caught a glimpse of a convulsedface and frantic eyes. I stood paralyzed, with the little box in myhand.
2. "You have no fear of burglars?"
3. "The first case reported was four days ago," said he. "It was at theshop of Morse Hudson, who has a place for the sale of pictures andstatues in the Kennington Road. The assistant had left the frontshop for an instant, when he heard a crash, and hurrying in he found aplaster bust of Napoleon, which stood with several other works ofart upon the counter, lying shivered into fragments. He rushed outinto the road, but, although several passers-by declared that they hadnoticed a man run out of the shop, he could neither see anyone norcould he find any means of identifying the rascal. It seemed to be oneof those senseless acts of Hooliganism which occur from time totime, and it was reported to the constable on the beat as such. Theplaster cast was not worth more than a few shillings, and the wholeaffair appeared to be too childish for any particular investigation."The second case, however, was more serious, and also more singular. It occurred only last night.
4、 "Forget what?"
5、 "Because it seemed to me to have an indirect bearing upon themystery of Woodman's Lee. Ah, Hopkins, I got your wire last night, andI have been expecting you. Come and join us."

consulting-room, where we found the doctor seated behind his table. It argues the degree in which I had lost touch with my professionthat the name of Leslie Armstrong was unknown to me. Now I am awarethat he is not only one of the heads of the medical school of theuniversity, but a thinker of European reputation in more than onebranch of science. Yet even without knowing his brilliant record onecould not fail to be impressed by a mere glance at the man, thesquare, massive face, the brooding eyes under the thatched brows, and the granite moulding of the inflexible jaw. A man of deepcharacter, a man with an alert mind, grim, ascetic, self-contained,formidable- so I read Dr. Leslie Armstrong. He held my friend's cardin his hand, and he looked up with no very pleased expression upon hisdour features.

It is of enormous importance that nothing further should leakout. The French or the Russian embassy would pay an immense sum tolearn the contents of these papers. They should not leave my bureauwere it not that it is absolutely necessary to have them copied. Youhave a desk in your office?'

{ "On May 1st the boy arrived, that being the beginning of thesummer term. He was a charming youth, and he soon fell into ourways. I may tell you- I trust that I am not indiscreet, buthalf-confidences are absurd in such a case- that he was not entirelyhappy at home. It is an open secret that the Duke's married life hadnot been a peaceful one, and the matter had ended in a separation bymutual consent, the Duchess taking up her residence in the south ofFrance. This had occurred very shortly before, and the boy'ssympathies are known to have been strongly with his mother. He mopedafter her departure from Holdernesse Hall, and it was for thisreason that the Duke desired to send him to my establishment. In afortnight the boy was quite at home with us and was apparentlyabsolutely happy.
