1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "What do you mean?" she asked.
2. "You never asked me," he returned.
3. "Louder," put in the director, finding it almost impossible tokeep his hands off.
4. "That's my affair," said Hurstwood grimly.
5. "He says there's an answer expected," she explained.
6. "Good-looking," he said to himself, and proceeded to visions ofcondescensions on her part which were exceedingly flattering tohimself.

1. "If you are going there, you will enjoy it immensely. Have yourelatives?"
2. "Is Carrie down at the door again?" he asked.
3. The rehearsal ended for one day, and Carrie went home feelingthat she had acquitted herself satisfactorily. The words of thedirector were ringing in her ears, and she longed for anopportunity to tell Hurstwood. She wanted him to know just howwell she was doing. Drouet, too, was an object for herconfidences. She could hardly wait until he should ask her, andyet she did not have the vanity to bring it up. The drummer, however, had another line of thought to-night, and her littleexperience did not appeal to him as important. He let theconversation drop, save for what she chose to recite withoutsolicitation, and Carrie was not good at that. He took it forgranted that she was doing very well and he was relieved offurther worry. Consequently he threw Carrie into repression, which was irritating. She felt his indifference keenly andlonged to see Hurstwood. It was as if he were now the onlyfriend she had on earth. The next morning Drouet was interestedagain, but the damage had been done.
4. The contagion of thought here demonstrated itself. While Hansonreally came for bread, the thought dwelt with him that now hewould see what Carrie was doing. No sooner did he draw near herwith that in mind than she felt it. Of course, she had nounderstanding of what put it into her head, but, nevertheless, itaroused in her the first shade of real antipathy to him. Sheknew now that she did not like him. He was suspicious.
5. "Is Mr. Drouet in?" said Hurstwood blandly.
6. The upshot of this was that the change was eventually effected;not without great gloom on the part of Carrie. It reallyaffected her more seriously than anything that had yet happened. She began to look upon Hurstwood wholly as a man, and not as alover or husband. She felt thoroughly bound to him as a wife, and that her lot was cast with his, whatever it might be; but shebegan to see that he was gloomy and taciturn, not a young, strong, and buoyant man. He looked a little bit old to her aboutthe eyes and mouth now, and there were other things which placedhim in his true rank, so far as her estimation was concerned. She began to feel that she had made a mistake. Incidentally, shealso began to recall the fact that he had practically forced herto flee with him.

推荐功能

1. It grated upon him to see the feeling his daughter displayed.
2. "Let go," said Hurstwood, savagely.
3. "I think so," returned Hurstwood. "He said he would."
4. "I'll not argue with you," she replied with determination. "Iwant the ticket and that's all there is to it."
5. "So you want something to do," said Mr. Brown, after he inquiredconcerning the nature of her errand. "Have you ever beenemployed in a shoe factory before?"
6. "Well!" he said after a time, quite audibly, "I don't know."

应用

1. "Ray," she said, gently, using a tone of voice much more calmthan when she had last appeared. It was the scene which hadpleased the director at the rehearsal.
2. He patted her reassuringly upon the shoulder, but Carrie felt howreally futile had been her hopes. She could clearly see thatthis easy-going soul intended no move in her behalf. He wassimply letting things drift because he preferred the free roundof his present state to any legal trammellings.
3. When he reached Forty-second Street, the fire signs were alreadyblazing brightly. Crowds were hastening to dine. Through brightwindows, at every corner, might be seen gay companies inluxuriant restaurants. There were coaches and crowded cablecars.
4、 "By George! it's a shame they should have it all," he vaguelythought to himself on several occasions. "I didn't do anything."
5、 Carrie looked vacantly at the richly carpeted floor. A new lightwas shining upon all the years since her enforced flight. Sheremembered now a hundred things that indicated as much. She alsoimagined that he took it on her account. Instead of hatredspringing up there was a kind of sorrow generated. Poor fellow! What a thing to have had hanging over his head all the time.

They arose and went out into the street. The downtown sectionwas now bare, save for a few whistling strollers, a few owl cars,a few open resorts whose windows were still bright. Out WabashAvenue they strolled, Drouet still pouring forth his volume ofsmall information. He had Carrie's arm in his, and held itclosely as he explained. Once in a while, after some witticism,he would look down, and his eyes would meet hers. At last theycame to the steps, and Carrie stood up on the first one, her headnow coming even with his own. He took her hand and held itgenially. He looked steadily at her as she glanced about, warmlymusing.

"You don't speak to your friends when you meet them out driving,do you?" he said, jocosely, to Mrs. Hurstwood.

The next morning he had cooled down considerably, and later theticket was duly secured, though it did not heal matters. He didnot mind giving his family a fair share of all that he earned, but he did not like to be forced to provide against his will.

Carrie stepped along easily enough after they got out of the carat Thirty-fourth Street, but soon fixed her eyes upon the lovelycompany which swarmed by and with them as they proceeded. Shenoticed suddenly that Mrs. Vance's manner had rather stiffenedunder the gaze of handsome men and elegantly dressed ladies, whose glances were not modified by any rules of propriety. Tostare seemed the proper and natural thing. Carrie found herselfstared at and ogled. Men in flawless top-coats, high hats, andsilver-headed walking sticks elbowed near and looked too ofteninto conscious eyes. Ladies rustled by in dresses of stiffcloth, shedding affected smiles and perfume. Carrie noticedamong them the sprinkling of goodness and the heavy percentage ofvice. The rouged and powdered cheeks and lips, the scented hair, the large, misty, and languorous eye, were common enough. With astart she awoke to find that she was in fashion's crowd, onparade in a show place--and such a show place! Jewellers' windowsgleamed along the path with remarkable frequency. Florist shops, furriers, haberdashers, confectioners--all followed in rapidsuccession. The street was full of coaches. Pompous doormen inimmense coats, shiny brass belts and buttons, waited in front ofexpensive salesrooms. Coachmen in tan boots, white tights, andblue jackets waited obsequiously for the mistresses of carriageswho were shopping inside. The whole street bore the flavour ofriches and show, and Carrie felt that she was not of it. Shecould not, for the life of her, assume the attitude and smartnessof Mrs. Vance, who, in her beauty, was all assurance. She couldonly imagine that it must be evident to many that she was theless handsomely dressed of the two. It cut her to the quick, andshe resolved that she would not come here again until she lookedbetter. At the same time she longed to feel the delight ofparading here as an equal. Ah, then she would be happy!
