1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 Hurstwood leaned forward. The whole audience was silent andintent.
2. Curiously this idea soon took hold of Hurstwood. His vanishingsum suggested that he would need sustenance. Why could notCarrie assist him a little until he could get something?
3. "Oh, yes," answered her husband. "This won't make anydifference."
4. "Come on," said Drouet. "Brace up. What are you afraid of? Goon out there now, and do the trick. What do you care?"
5. "Is that so? Had your breakfast?"
6. Vance was in his element here, as Hurstwood would have been informer days. He ordered freely of soup, oysters, roast meats, and side dishes, and had several bottles of wine brought, whichwere set down beside the table in a wicker basket.

1. "You mustn't worry, sweetheart," he said. "Just as soon as hegoes on the road again we will arrange something. We'll fix itso that you won't have to deceive any one."
2. "Yes," he returned; "but you can't go by what the papers say. They'll run the cars all right."
3. This was rather awkwardly put by Patton, but Carrie redeemed itwith a grace which was inspiring.
4. "What is your line?" asked Carrie.
5. "Go back home, I guess."
6. Now the conductor entered the car and took up the one or twofares that had been added at Chicago. He approached Hurstwood, who handed out the tickets. Poised as she was to act, Carriemade no move. She did not look about.

1. "Oh," said Carrie.
2. Carrie walked over to the door.
3. "We can get along if we economise. I'll pay you back all right."
4. "Huh!" returned the grocer. "This is fine. I must have that. Ineed the money."
5. "Let's go over and look at the jackets," he said.
6. The morning was no better. Hanson was just going out the door asCarrie came from her room. Minnie tried to talk with her duringbreakfast, but there was not much of interest which they couldmutually discuss. As on the previous morning, Carrie walked downtown, for she began to realise now that her four-fifty would noteven allow her car fare after she paid her board. This seemed amiserable arrangement. But the morning light swept away thefirst misgivings of the day, as morning light is ever wont to do.

1. Before following her in her round of seeking, let us look at thesphere in which her future was to lie. In 1889 Chicago had thepeculiar qualifications of growth which made such adventuresomepilgrimages even on the part of young girls plausible. Its manyand growing commercial opportunities gave it widespread fame, which made of it a giant magnet, drawing to itself, from allquarters, the hopeful and the hopeless--those who had theirfortune yet to make and those whose fortunes and affairs hadreached a disastrous climax elsewhere. It was a city of over500,000, with the ambition, the daring, the activity of ametropolis of a million. Its streets and houses were alreadyscattered over an area of seventy-five square miles. Itspopulation was not so much thriving upon established commerce asupon the industries which prepared for the arrival of others. Thesound of the hammer engaged upon the erection of new structureswas everywhere heard. Great industries were moving in. The hugerailroad corporations which had long before recognised theprospects of the place had seized upon vast tracts of land fortransfer and shipping purposes. Street-car lines had beenextended far out into the open country in anticipation of rapidgrowth. The city had laid miles and miles of streets and sewersthrough regions where, perhaps, one solitary house stood outalone--a pioneer of the populous ways to be. There were regionsopen to the sweeping winds and rain, which were yet lightedthroughout the night with long, blinking lines of gas-lamps,fluttering in the wind. Narrow board walks extended out, passinghere a house, and there a store, at far intervals, eventuallyending on the open prairie.
2. "Yes," she answered, with an air of quiet understanding.
3. "If I were you," he said, "I'd change."
4、 Hurstwood went toward the car and stepped nervously on. As hedid so there was a pistol shot. Something stung his shoulder.
5、 He noted her puzzled look, and then added: "What is it you wishto see about?"

Carrie became frightened over this announcement. She thoughtdesperately upon the subject. Frequently she had considered thestage as a door through which she might enter that gilded statewhich she had so much craved. Now, as in Chicago, it came as alast resource in distress. Something must be done if he did notget work soon. Perhaps she would have to go out and battle againalone.
