1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "I saw you, Governor, last night."
2. "It's hell these days, ain't it?" said the man. "A poor manain't nowhere. You could starve, by God, right in the streets, and there ain't most no one would help you."
3. "So long," said Shaughnessy, scarcely deigning a notice.
4. The car was turned in and he was allowed to loaf a while, butlater he was again called. This time a new team of officers wasaboard. Slightly more confident, he sped the car along thecommonplace streets and felt somewhat less fearful. On one side, however, he suffered intensely. The day was raw, with asprinkling of snow and a gusty wind, made all the moreintolerable by the speed of the car. His clothing was notintended for this sort of work. He shivered, stamped his feet, and beat his arms as he had seen other motormen do in the past, but said nothing. The novelty and danger of the situationmodified in a way his disgust and distress at being compelled tobe here, but not enough to prevent him from feeling grim andsour. This was a dog's life, he thought. It was a tough thingto have to come to.
5. Drouet jumped from one easy thought to another as he caughtHurstwood's eye. He felt but very little misgiving, until he sawthat Hurstwood was cautiously pretending not to see. Then someof the latter's impression forced itself upon him. He thought ofCarrie and their last meeting. By George, he would have toexplain this to Hurstwood. Such a chance half-hour with an oldfriend must not have anything more attached to it than it reallywarranted.
6. "If we didn't you'd get your money back."

1. "It ain't no fun, is it?" he inquired, wishing vainly for acheery reply.
2. As she looked at him, she wondered what his financial state wasnow. They ate and talked a little.
3. "Don't you think it rather fine to be an actor?" she asked once.
4. "Isn't it bad?" she observed to Lola.
5. "Well, I should say so. That's the way. Put life into it. Youdid that about a thousand per cent. better than you did theother scene. Now go on and fire up. You can do it. Knock 'em."
6. On the stage, six of the characters had already appeared in theopening parlour scene. Drouet and Hurstwood saw at a glance thatCarrie was not among them, and went on talking in a whisper.Mrs. Morgan, Mrs. Hoagland, and the actor who had takenBamberger's part were representing the principal roles in thisscene. The professional, whose name was Patton, had little torecommend him outside of his assurance, but this at the presentmoment was most palpably needed. Mrs. Morgan, as Pearl, wasstiff with fright. Mrs. Hoagland was husky in the throat. Thewhole company was so weak-kneed that the lines were merelyspoken, and nothing more. It took all the hope and uncriticalgood-nature of the audience to keep from manifesting pity by thatunrest which is the agony of failure.

1. "No," said Carrie, "I can't. You've been so kind, but you'llhave to excuse me."
2. "I have to be home by five," said Carrie.
3. At that time the department store was in its earliest form ofsuccessful operation, and there were not many. The first three inthe United States, established about 1884, were in Chicago.Carrie was familiar with the names of several through theadvertisements in the "Daily News," and now proceeded to seekthem. The words of Mr. McManus had somehow managed to restoreher courage, which had fallen low, and she dared to hope thatthis new line would offer her something. Some time she spent inwandering up and down, thinking to encounter the buildings bychance, so readily is the mind, bent upon prosecuting a hard butneedful errand, eased by that self-deception which the semblanceof search, without the reality, gives. At last she inquired of apolice officer, and was directed to proceed "two blocks up,"where she would find "The Fair."
4. When the conductor had gone again Hurstwood felt relieved.
5. "No, sir," said Carrie, "it's Madenda."
6. Now a fierce feeling against Carrie welled up--just one fierce, angry thought before the whole thing slipped out of his mind.

1. "Well, now, that's a blooming shame, isn't it? You don't lookvery well. I thought you looked a little pale. What have youbeen doing?"
2. "Well, you act like it, rowing around over my looks. You'd thinkI'd committed----"
3. "I might win a couple of hundred. I'm not out of practice."
4、 "Well, well," said Drouet, "you did out of sight. That wassimply great. I knew you could do it. Oh, but you're a littledaisy!"
5、 There was, however, at this time, one theatre, the Chicago OperaHouse, which was considerably in the public eye, and its manager,David A. Henderson, had a fair local reputation. Carrie had seenone or two elaborate performances there and had heard of severalothers. She knew nothing of Henderson nor of the methods ofapplying, but she instinctively felt that this would be a likelyplace, and accordingly strolled about in that neighbourhood. Shecame bravely enough to the showy entrance way, with the polishedand begilded lobby, set with framed pictures out of the currentattraction, leading up to the quiet box-office, but she could getno further. A noted comic opera comedian was holding forth thatweek, and the air of distinction and prosperity overawed her.She could not imagine that there would be anything in such alofty sphere for her. She almost trembled at the audacity whichmight have carried her on to a terrible rebuff. She could findheart only to look at the pictures which were showy and then walkout. It seemed to her as if she had made a splendid escape andthat it would be foolhardy to think of applying in that quarteragain.

The flare of the gas-jets, the open trunks, suggestive of traveland display, the scattered contents of the make-up box--rouge,pearl powder, whiting, burnt cork, India ink, pencils for theeye-lids, wigs, scissors, looking-glasses, drapery--in short, allthe nameless paraphernalia of disguise, have a remarkableatmosphere of their own. Since her arrival in the city manythings had influenced her, but always in a far-removed manner. This new atmosphere was more friendly. It was wholly unlike thegreat brilliant mansions which waved her coldly away, permittingher only awe and distant wonder. This took her by the handkindly, as one who says, "My dear, come in." It opened for her asif for its own. She had wondered at the greatness of the namesupon the bill-boards, the marvel of the long notices in thepapers, the beauty of the dresses upon the stage, the atmosphereof carriages, flowers, refinement. Here was no illusion. Herewas an open door to see all of that. She had come upon it as onewho stumbles upon a secret passage and, behold, she was in thechamber of diamonds and delight!
